Edition Peters originated on 1 December 1800 when the Viennese composer Franz Anton Hoffmeister and the local organist Ambrosius Kühnel opened the "Bureau de Musique” in Leipzig. The first music published included chamber music works by Haydn and Mozart, as well as the world's first edition of Bach's Keyboard works. After the departure of Hoffmeister to Vienna and Kühnel’s passing, the company was sold to Carl Friedrich Peters, a Leipzig bookseller, who added to Peters catalogue works by Weber, Hummel, Klengel and Ries together with his name before his passing.

In 1860, the company was sold to Julius Friedländer. By 1880 Peters had begun issuing new works by contemporary composers of the era, by 1900 works by Brahms, Bruch, Grieg, Kölner, Moszkowski, Reger, Sinding and Wagner and by 1932 Mahler, Schoenberg, Wolf and Richard Strauss.

In spite of suffering the consequences of World War II, the publisher managed to continue its course and issued contemporary works of composers including Dessau, Eisler, Geisler, Khachaturian, Shostakovich, Scriabin and others.

Finally all companies created during the years, Peters Edition Ltd in London, C.F. Peters Corporation in New York and C.F. Peters Musikverlag in Frankfurt/Main, the Leipzig firms of the Edition Peters merged in August 2010 to form the Edition Peters Group. Their headquarters was moved in July 2014 from Frankfurt to Leipzig, the city where the company was founded.
