Calliope Tsoupaki - Composer

Calliope Tsoupaki makes music that has a mood of timelessness. Her objective is expressing the essence as simply and clearly as possible. In her compositions she uses elements of early and contemporary music as well as the music of Greece and the Middle East. Calliope Tsoupaki was born on May 27, 1963, in Piraeus (Greece). She has been living in the Netherlands since 1988 and teaches composition at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.

Calliope Tsoupaki was born on May 27, 1963, in Piraeus (Greece).

Education: Calliope Tsoupaki was educated at the Hellinicon Conservatory in Athens and took composition lessons with Yannis Ioanithis. Besides that, she took summer courses with Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez, and participated in the Internationale Ferienkurse in Darmstadt in 1984 and 1986. 
In the Netherlands, Tsoupaki continued her studies in composition with Louis Andriessen and in electronic music with Gilius van Bergeijk at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Career: In 2006 and 2015 Calliope was a member of the jury International Gaudeamus Music Week. Since 2007, she is teaching composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Compositions: In the Netherlands she developed into one of the defining composers of Dutch musical life. Her music is praised for its melodic character, warm sound and emotional quality.

To date her oeuvre consists of more than 70 works for various instrumentations, from solo to orchestral works, dance, theater, opera and multimedia projects.
Calliope Tsoupaki's music is performed at contemporary music festivals, in major concert halls worldwide and is also available on CD.
In 1998, Calliope was composer-in-residence of IEMA Centre Contemporary Music Athens and in 2001 of the Sweelinck Conservatory Amsterdam. She wrote several commissions for the Holland Festival in 2015, 2014, 2010 and 2008.

Overwhelming successes include her St. Luke Passion, the Greek Love Songs for singer Nena Venetsanou, the oratorio Oidipous, Maria for the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the chamber operas Dark (about Joan of Arc, libretto Edzard Mik), Vita Nova (based on Dante's book with the same title) and the string quartet Triptychon for the DoelenKwartet.

Her opera ‘Mariken in the Garden of Delights’ (OPERA2DAY & Asko|Schönberg Ensemble), based on a late medieval Dutch text, premiered in October 2015 in the Netherlands with an unprecedented number of scheduled performances and raving reviews.

Premiere: The piece with the title “Groeibriljant” was premiered in fragments as work in progress during the string quartet season concerts at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, from October 2012 to May 2013. Each string quartet was performing the previous minutes plus the new that were composed specially for their concert. The last quartet (Matanghi string quartet) premiered the completed work.
The composition is renamed ‘Eothinon’ and it is the third part of the trilogy for string quartet and clarinet “TRIPTYCHON”

The piece is composed within a 24 hours enclosure of the composer in a glass house at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ from 6 March 2014. 16.00 till 7 March 16.00. The concept “Far From Home” was meant to show to the public the loneliness of the creative composing procedure and is commissioned by Calexax ensemble and the Netherlands Chamber Choir.
The composition is included later in a different setting, as introduction (Parodos) of OIDIPOUS oratorio.

The compositions embrace and incorporate several light motives from the Ring Opera Cyclus.

Ring II was sung under selected trees in the city of Amsterdam where people could simultaneously make their wish for 2014, for a better world, with respect for humans, animals and the planet, a life we all dream of. The activity was named “Boom Amsterdam is an opera”

November 2022 Cello Biennalle : 
"Wind of Love" was the obligatory piece for the prestigious Dutch National cello concours
"Behind the Moon” for cello and piano  was premiered at the opening concert of the Cello Biennalle 
 
- The amazing new double bass  talent Sasha Witteveen is playing on her tour through out Holland featuring as finalist fo the Dutch Classical talent price, the new piece for double bass solo “Scorpio”
 
_ My piece Penelope a part of the program concept “They have waited long enough” was performed at Tivoli, November Music festival and St John’s Smith Squar in London.
